The recap

Golden State Warriors 134, Denver Nuggets 114: a 40-point third and 22 threes

Golden State made 22 threes and scored 40 in the third quarter to beat Denver 134-114 at Ball Arena, covering 6.5 and going over 236.5.

The Golden State Warriors beat the Denver Nuggets 134-114 at Ball Arena on Monday night. The three-point line decided it. Golden State made 22 of 44 from deep, and Denver made 10 of 29. That is a 36-point gap from three in a game decided by 20.

Denver won almost everything else. The Nuggets had more points in the paint, 48 to 42, and fewer turnovers, 12 to 18. Both teams made 20 free throws and recorded 31 assists. None of it mattered against that volume of made threes.

How it was won

Denver started well. The Nuggets won the first quarter 32-28 and led by as many as 8. Golden State took the second 32-24 and went into the break up 60-56.

The game turned in the third. Golden State scored 40 points in the quarter to Denver's 28 and took a 100-84 lead into the fourth. The Nuggets never got the gap under double figures in any meaningful way after that. Golden State won the fourth 34-30, and its lead reached 24 at its largest.

Yaxel Lendeborg led everyone with 31 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. He did it without his outside shot, going 1 of 8 from three, which says plenty about how much damage he did inside and at the line. Stephen Curry scored 24 and went 3 of 3 from deep. Brandin Podziemski added 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists.

Golden State shot 54 percent from the field on 46 of 85 and won the rebounding battle 45-32. Thirteen extra boards gave the Warriors extra possessions to cover their 18 turnovers.

For Denver, DeMar DeRozan led with 21 points on 2 of 5 from three. Nikola Jokic had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 11 assists, but went 1 of 6 from three. Jamal Murray matched Jokic with 19 points and added 6 rebounds and 8 assists, going 3 of 6 from deep. The Nuggets shot a respectable 50 percent overall on 42 of 84. Their problem was the shot profile, not the efficiency inside the arc.

Against the number

Denver closed as a 6.5-point favorite. Golden State covered with room to spare, winning outright by 20, so the Warriors beat the spread by 26.5 points.

The moneyline was the bigger miss for anyone backing Denver. Golden State closed at +220 and Denver at -270. The underdog winning by 20 at that price is the kind of result the market did not see coming.

The total closed at 236.5 and the teams combined for 248, so the over cashed by 11.5. Golden State supplied most of it on its own with 134. The pace of the third quarter, 68 combined points, did a lot of the work.
